Notes from us...

We are not lawyers and can not give legal counsel, we may be able to guide you in the direction to find legal help. We are not psychiatrists  We are survivors, friends of survivors and caring community members trying to reach out to others.  By doing this we try to stop the abuse from happening to the next child.  No child should have to live with the horrors of child abuse and the aftermath it leaves for a life time!

Without our technical experts, this page would not exist, as we ourselves are still learning our way around computers, they are responsible for putting our vision onto the Internet. We thank them especially for their patience and the ability to do the impossible on their own time.

In searching for these services over the years, we have realized how much more we need. In many communities there is no specific public support groups for parents of children who have been abused or adult survivors of childhood abuse.  The cost of getting the mental health care you need is high unless you are lucky enough to live in a community with a sliding scale fee for help.  For those who have neither insurance, or Medicaid to pay for counseling the choices for professional help in their recovery are reduced. If anyone here in Alaska has counseling services that fit low or no income needs please contact us; the same about support groups.

For those of you who do have insurance, and the income to see a professional for help in recovery the Therapists we currently have listed are competent and caring individuals who have helped many.  I am one of those who had help from a local therapist in my journey to recovery. I couldn't have made it to this path of security and serenity that I am on now without the help from this therapist, my sponsors and friends in another recovery group, a patient husband and son, and a belief in a higher power that is not me....

Help in our Alaskan Child Abuse Awareness Campaign

We used forget-me-not flowers to represent the children of the state of Alaska and to remind people of the innocence lost when children are abused - the innocence that may be saved with your help. These will be on Mint Green Ribbon pins which represent Child Abuse Awareness. Pins are given out in April to be worn during National Child Abuse Awareness month here in Alaskan cities. Pins are dispersed on educational pamphlets that are regional specific in their information such as where to get help, where to report abuse, and how to get involved in your community. There are many opportunities to get involved in this campaign.

If you would like to help in any way please contact us. Email: Help@RIDAlaskaOfChildAbuse or Snail Mail: PO Box 35595, Juneau AK 99908.

Mint Green or Blue ?

Holli Marshal (an adult survivor of child abuse) started and copyrighted the "Mint Green Ribbon-Awareness of Abuse" campaign several years ago.  Holli chose the color of mint green because when a baby is expected the "boy/girl gift" color has been "mint green".

RID Alaska Child Sexual Abuse found Holli's ribbon idea on the Internet in 1996. With Holli's permission RID personalized her idea to keep the campaign focus on the children here in the Last Frontier.  RID added the forget-me-not here in Alaska in 1996 to represent the children of the State of Alaska (the Alaska State flower looks much better on Mint Green).  RID Alaska of Child Abuse has further personalized the "Mint Green Ribbon" campaign by pinning the ribbons to "Information Pamphlets" that are region specific for the areas here in Alaska involved in the campaign.

This "Alaskan" campaign is funded here in the state by contributions from businesses, and concerned people here in Alaska. All donations will be put back into this Alaskan Campaign to keep it self supporting. Any funds over the needed amount to keep this yearly campaign going will be put into helping children and families here in our great state.

I heard about a blue ribbon campaign for "Free speech on the Internet" back in 1996. I did not run across a "blue ribbon" for Child Abuse Prevention until 1997. Both ideas are helpful. We did not mean to reinvent the wheel, or to confuse anybody.
Sincerely,

Tia M. Holley -Founder, Past President and Past Vice President of RID Alaska of Child Abuse
RID Alaska of Child Abuse

We have changed our name to RID Alaska of Child Abuse to better reflect what our educational pamphlets and website now do.  We want to be a voice in fighting all types of child abuse!
